Anne Kolb Nature Center is a Broward County Park located near the public beach in Hollywood Florida. It is also known as West Lake Park, and although I am sure there is some political reason for that, I don’t know what it is.
During the 1920′s this area was dredged and otherwise damaged extensively. During the 1980′s the land was purchased as a wetlands mitigation program and an effort was made to restore the area to it’s original state as estuarine tidal marsh and it is now a mangrove preserve.
There is a nice Exhibit Hall with a large aquarium and educational area, an observation tower and hiking trails. There are also canoes and kayaks for rent, what I would call a lecture hall and probably some other stuff I’m unaware of. They also have lot’s of activities for kids like feeding the fish in the aquariums and talks about wildlife.
This place is a great resource. Much of it has free access and the events and areas that do cost money are reasonable. Access to the Exhibit Hall is $1 for instance.
If you live in the area take advantage of what your tax dollars are paying for and if you’re visiting please have a look at some of our natural areas like this.
