Just a little in-progress update on the 2013 Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach map…

Show Management and I have decided to upgrade the 2013 map and use a 3D model built in SketchUp much like we had success with on the St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map. As in that case, the model can be rendered from different angles making a new look from year to year much easier and creating options for other supporting material as well. This map has been a challenge to me and my computer’s capabilities. I still have some revisions pending, but I made a fun fly-through video of the project as it is now that is only a little over a minute long and I’m posting some renderings of other angles of the map here as well. Enjoy.

Additional information on the show is available from Show Management.

2013 Miami Boat Show Transit map

These maps are a little departure from what I normally do. I must admit that making a normal, flat map crammed with information was challenging and interesting. I was determined to make the separate metro mover loops differentiated even with limited space available. I know how frustrating it can be using public transit in an unfamiliar city and missing a transfer can really ruin your day. I hope I save some people that agony and encourage the use of Miami’s wonderful mass transit system. I will certainly be using it when I visit the show.

The boat show will be Feb. 14 through Feb. 18, 2013. If you need additional information about the boat show visit miamiboatshow.com.

the 2012 St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map (See the same map larger and on Ipad)
St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map

I wanted to do something new this year for the St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map. It had occurred to me that when it comes to recurrent events a virtual 3D model created in a modeling software could have some advantages. Mainly the angle and the lighting could be altered from year to year without having to start all over again. This could provide a new look for the map every year without a lot of labor.

I wasn’t sure just how difficult this would be or if it was even realistically feasible. I wanted to make any test as authentic as possible so that any issues that would effect a real world situation could be identified and hopefully resolved. Considering the scale of such a test I thought it was best to just go ahead and start with a real project. The St. Petersburg show map seemed like a more manageable scale than most of my recurring events so I chose it and began. After a bit of tinkering I felt sure it was possible and showed the partially complete model to the folks at Show Management. They were open minded enough to see the potential and gave me the green light to proceed. We are all pleased with the result. I hope you enjoy it too and have a great time at the show.

The boat show will be Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012. If you need additional information about the boat show visit www.ShowManagement.com.

Dock layout changes to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show map

The 53rd Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is upon us (October 25-29, 2012) and it’s the third year my maps have been used as a visual guide for the event.

This year I decided to illustrate how the primary layout changes from year to year in the animation above. Without seeing the animation the changes may appear to be superficial, but as you can see they are actually quite substantial. The method I used to create the initial map makes it possible for me to make these major revisions without starting all over. The buildings, landscape, and any permanent structures can remain in the illustration from year to year without any image quality lose.

As usual, I made revisions to the primary map which I initially designed two years ago. I also revised the six double page detail maps that highlight specific tents. The Fort Lauderdale Convention Center Map and the Transit Map also required some attention. Show Management will also be using the maps for the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina and Sails Marina which I designed and illustrated.

This will be the third year that Show Management has integrated my maps into their phone app, MyBoatShow, which is available for Iphone and Android. MyBoatShow has won a Gold, W3 Award, honoring web-based creative excellence. The W3 is sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. Less than 10% of more than 3,000 entries were selected as Gold Winners. MyBoatShow was judged based on: creativity, usability, navigation, functionality, visual design, and ease of use. I am honored to have played even a small roll in Show Management receiving this great honor.

This year, in addition to being used at the show by Show Management, the main map will be featured in Yachts International Magazine, Boat International Magazine, and Power & Motoryacht Magazine.

Additional information on the show is available from Show Management. The phone app is available for download here.

If you haven’t seen the video I made of the initial creation of the main map please have a look. It’s pretty entertaining….
