Photoshop Time-Lapse Snow Scene

By John Potter

Before After

Foreign Trade Zone Corporation of Mobile, Alabama recently approached me with a project. There was a need for a holiday card photo of their offices. They wanted a snowy scene at night. Unfortunately, the only images available to them were during the day and without snow (since it doesn’t snow in Mobile). The photos were great and the basis of the project.

This was a great project for me. It was a great opportunity to do something really cool (no pun intended) in Photoshop. I decided to record the project in on going screen capture and made a time-lapse video of the process from it. I did have one crash that resulted in some of the work not being included in the video, but most is. The video represents about five hours of work compressed down to about six minutes. I hope you enjoy it.

The video is available below from Vimeo and my server and it is also available from Youtube. If you like the time lapse format, you may also be interested in my “Adobe Illustrator Time-Lapse Video

1990s Panoramic Photograph

By John Potter

Go straight to the panorama

Back in the ’90s when I was working for Intra Corp Entertainment I used to use mass transit to commute sometimes. I was already playing around with photography a little bit and took these photos from the platform for the Metrorail at Brickell Station which is at 1001 South West First Avenue (map of Miami Metromover stations). These photos were taken some time between 1994 and 1996, but probably 1995 (at the same time). I was carrying a camera with me a lot because I was shooting reference and material for textures for TekWar the game. I used a 35 millimeter SLR, and only in the past few years have I had the software to properly stitch the images together. Ipix was already around, but I think I was unaware of the existance of immersive photography at the time. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of David Hockney’s photo mosaics.

If you frequent the area you may be able to spot differences in the skyline.

Bitmap and Vector Graphics; A Simple Explanation

By John Potter

A bitmap image
Closeup of the same image

Bitmap graphics; sometimes called raster graphics, are made up of a bunch of different colored pixels placed into a pattern that appears as an image when seen at a resolution where the pixels are small. Each pixel is defined by the amount of three colors that it has in it, which are red, green and blue. This is the RGB value you may hear about from time to time. The computer reads three sets of numbers that describes these color values and then displays a pixel with the described characteristics on the screen. This works well for photos and things like that since it can show subtle variations in color and value (light to dark). In print this kind of image is sometimes referred to as continuous tone image. The term “rasterizing” means to taking an image that is not a bitmap and turning it into one.
