I’m very excited to unveil the 2013 Palm Beach International Boat Show Map. This is just the latest of my 3D rendered maps, but in many ways the most ambitious and the first I have made a time lapse video from. The map encompasses an area known as the Palm Beach Waterfront and City Commons as well as extending south along Flagler Drive. This map includes a lot of buildings compared to most of my boat show maps. Buildings include Meyer Amphitheater, the PNC Bank Building, Esplanade Grande, The Strand, McKeen Towers, Trump Plaza and more. These landmarks should be of great help to visitors to the show in orienting themselves within their surroundings. The original, vector based map was also revised and is used in the free boat show phone app.

The map will appear in the boat show program available for free at the show and on signage throughout the show. It will also appear in the Palm Beach Boat Show special section of The Palm Beach Post and Palm Beach Daily News’ annual broadsheet section about the show. If you didn’t see my previous post showing the map/model from different angles please have a look.

The 3D mapping technique has required me to learn several new software packages. The work itself comes first and this is the first time I felt absolutely positive that I was proficient enough with the new software that making a time lapse video couldn’t pose any undue distraction. The project was large and lengthy as you can see in the video, but I left out large chunks of time from the video because even at a vastly increased frame rate it becomes a little tedious. You may notice that the final map extends further south and the docks extend further out than in the video. That was the result of late stage revisions. I skipped recording the setup of the labeling, keying and page layout as well.
I hope you enjoy the video and the final map.

the Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach 2013 map (See the same map larger and on Ipad)

The maps for the 2013 Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach are now complete.
In addition to revising the existing map of the primary Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach map for the phone app I created a new 3D map (as seen in my previous post featuring a video fly through) for print which will be featured in Show Management’s boat show program as well as in Yachts International Magazine. The new 3D map is a big departure from last years map and a huge step forward in quality and flexibility. The 3D map extends from around 41st Street and Collins Avenue north up Collins Avenue and ends just south of the 53rd Street Park. The map includes the Fontainebleau Hotel, the Eden Roc, The Blue and Green Diamond and The Miami Beach Sea Resort and Spa. It is always exciting to get an opportunity to illustrate so many famous and historic places.

Also of note…The parking map from last year was also updated.

The boat show is February 14th through 18th. Admission to the boat show is free and boat show programs containing the maps are available free of charge at the show. The phone app is available for freee download here. Additional information on the show is available from Show Management.

Just a little in-progress update on the 2013 Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami Beach map…

Show Management and I have decided to upgrade the 2013 map and use a 3D model built in SketchUp much like we had success with on the St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map. As in that case, the model can be rendered from different angles making a new look from year to year much easier and creating options for other supporting material as well. This map has been a challenge to me and my computer’s capabilities. I still have some revisions pending, but I made a fun fly-through video of the project as it is now that is only a little over a minute long and I’m posting some renderings of other angles of the map here as well. Enjoy.

the 2012 St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map (See the same map larger and on Ipad)
St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map

I wanted to do something new this year for the St. Petersburg Power & Sailboat Show map. It had occurred to me that when it comes to recurrent events a virtual 3D model created in a modeling software could have some advantages. Mainly the angle and the lighting could be altered from year to year without having to start all over again. This could provide a new look for the map every year without a lot of labor.

I wasn’t sure just how difficult this would be or if it was even realistically feasible. I wanted to make any test as authentic as possible so that any issues that would effect a real world situation could be identified and hopefully resolved. Considering the scale of such a test I thought it was best to just go ahead and start with a real project. The St. Petersburg show map seemed like a more manageable scale than most of my recurring events so I chose it and began. After a bit of tinkering I felt sure it was possible and showed the partially complete model to the folks at Show Management. They were open minded enough to see the potential and gave me the green light to proceed. We are all pleased with the result. I hope you enjoy it too and have a great time at the show.

The boat show will be Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012. If you need additional information about the boat show visit www.ShowManagement.com.
