I was recently subcontracted by City Streetz, a full service graphics shop here in Fort Lauderdale, to create a map for The Ah Tah Thi Ki Museum highlighting some of Florida’s Seminole Indian heritage. City Streetz frequently calls upon me for illustration projects and, of course, maps.

Map Cover (and back cover on left)

The Ah Tah Thi Ki Museum had an existing map, but it was very dated, so my task was to bring it up to date. The map was to be in a poster format (34′X22") that folded down to 8.5"X11". For the map itself, this meant completely recreating it and for the rest of the panels on the map the previous design could serve as a rough guide. I screen captured some of the highlights of the project in time lapse video. I hope you enjoy it.

The Miami Boat Show actually consists of three boat shows. The Miami International Boat Show and Strictly Sail Miami are both managed by The National Marine Manufacturers Association (informally known as NMMA), and The Yacht and Brokerage Show is managed by Show Management.

(I did not design the program cover)

NMMA contracted me to design maps for The Miami Beach Convention Center, Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center and Miamarina at Bayside venues. Show Management contracted me to design a map for the Collins Avenue venue. Yachts International Magazine worked out an arrangement with Show Management to use the Collins Avenue map at a plateau point in development. NMMA also ended up needing a bus and water taxi route map.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Map – Adobe Illustrator Time-Lapse Video
By John Potter

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Map – Illustrator Time-Lapse from John Potter on Vimeo.

I have just completed the map for the 2010 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which takes place annually here in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It’s the biggest boat show in the world and a real big deal here in town. Estimates show that last years show brought about $500 million into the local economy.

Printed Map

Show Management; the company that puts on the boat show, wanted me to design a friendlier, more illustrative map than the map they had used in previous years. They were very short on time and it was a real challenge. The rendering was based on CAD drawings provided by Jeremy Thayer over at Show Management and the project simply could not have been done in such a short time frame, or with as high a degree of accuracy without those drawings as a foundation. Also…GPS can’t help me when the floating docks aren’t in place yet. Daily updates and a few frenzied meetings with Marketing Director, Steve Sheer and Web Manager, Paul Brown (both also of Show Management) kept me on track.

This is one of the largest and most comprehensive projects I have ever undertaken and with a very tight deadline. The project came in on time and the client and I are both pleased with the result.
