Photorealistic Drawing of a Cologne V6 Engine
Artist: John Potter
Graphite on Paper - 28"X19"

This is a photorealistic graphite drawing I completed in 1986 as part of a college class project. The subject is the 2.8 liter (171 cubic inch) Cologne V6 engine from a well worn 1976 Mustang I owned at the time. The assignment required a finished piece at 8.5 by 11 inches or larger, to be completed within a two week timeframe.
I began by shooting my own reference photograph to ensure control over the composition and lighting. To accurately scale and transfer the complex mechanical details onto the paper, I employed a traditional grid system. The drawing was executed on Rives BFK paper, which was taped to a sheet of masonite for a stable working surface. The rendering was achieved using a full suite of traditional drawing tools: graphite artists' pencils and sticks for range and depth, tortillions and blending stumps for smooth gradations, and kneaded, plastic, and gum erasers for precise highlights and corrections.
This piece exemplifies a specific and demanding drawing discipline. It operates within the intriguing paradox of photorealism, where the ultimate technical success; creating an image so convincing it is often mistaken for a photograph, can obscure the considerable skill and labor involved. Beyond its role as a class project, it stands as an early testament to my foundational skills in observation, meticulous craftsmanship, and sustained patience.
This drawing represents the core principles of accuracy, detail, and studied observation that inform all my work. It highlights a traditional fine art skill set built on technical control and a deep understanding of light, form, and texture.
My professional illustration services are rooted in this same disciplined approach to visual problem solving, whether the project requires technical accuracy, conceptual narrative, or stylistic interpretation. I apply a meticulous attention to detail across all mediums to meet specific client objectives.
This drawing remains a personal benchmark for technical execution.
