Contemporary Style Painting (oils on stretched linen 36"X52")
Artist: John Potter

"Iguana" is an original contemporary painting and a distinctive entry in my ongoing series focused on the artistic potential of linear halftones. In this body of work, these custom, systematic lines serve as the foundational architecture of the image, structuring form and shadow while creating a unique graphic rhythm.
The painting explores the dynamic interplay between deliberate control and organic expression. A core concept of the piece is the use of semi randomized color relationships within both the highlights and shadows of the composition. This approach introduces an element of intuitive color play, where hues interact in unexpected yet harmonious ways. The structured yet warped halftone grid acts as a vital organizing force, providing the underlying order that maintains the image's clarity and legibility amidst this chromatic experimentation.
To heighten visual interest, the conventional logic of light and shadow is deliberately subverted in key areas. This reversal of expected values creates focal points of tension and emphasis, inviting the viewer to look closer and engage with the texture and depth of the form. The subject, an iguana, is rendered with a blend of naturalistic detail and contemporary graphic style, resulting in a painting that feels both ancient and distinctly contemporary.
Technique & Process
The creation of "Iguana" follows a meticulous, multi stage process that bridges traditional and contemporary methods. It begins with an initial black and white drawing, focusing purely on form and value. This drawing is then digitally re engineered into a custom linear halftone pattern, which becomes the essential blueprint for the painting.
The artwork is executed primarily with acrylic paints on stretched linen. These were chosen for their versatility and vibrant pigmentation. These are enhanced with subtle, strategic applications of oil paint, adding a layer of richness and depth to the surface texture. The painting is finished with a protective oil based varnish, which unifies the surface and provides a durable, archival finish.
Collector Considerations
"Iguana" appeals to those with an appreciation for process driven art, contemporary graphic style, and natural subjects reimagined. Its sophisticated color theory and textural complexity make it a compelling piece for study, while its striking graphic presence ensures it acts as a bold statement in any contemporary interior.
