Geometric Color Field Wall Art in a Game Room
Client: Boca Grove Golf and Country Club

This large-scale color field mural is for the newly established game room at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club. The project presented an opportunity to create a vibrant, immersive atmosphere through abstract geometric forms, directly responding to the client's vision for a dynamic social space.
The primary artistic inspiration, as requested by the client, derives from the celebrated work of Brazilian muralist Eduardo Kobra. Known for his monumental portraits overlaid on bold, graphic patterns, Kobra's style informed the foundational concept of juxtaposing a detailed background pattern with figurative elements. In adapting this approach for a more intimate setting, I made several key decisions to tailor the concept. I opted for a smaller, more intricate pattern than is typical in Kobra's vast public works, introducing a greater level of subtlety and complexity. The pattern itself features a horizontal banded spectrum, where each color is represented by a staggered vertical column of isometric cubes. This deliberate geometric structure introduces a three-dimensional, architectural quality to the field of color, a visual language that subtly connects to my professional background in dimensional cartography and illustration.
The execution of the pattern was a meticulous and labor-intensive process. Beginning with a template, ruler, and level, I refined the method to rely solely on the ruler and level, which proved more efficient and yielded a cleaner, more precise line quality. Achieving the desired spectrum required extensive color mixing. Using high-quality Golden Mural & Theme paints, I aimed for maximum color saturation and vibrancy straight from the container where possible, ultimately custom mixing approximately two-thirds of the palette to achieve the precise tonal relationships within the isometric grid.
Once the complex color field was established, I rendered a single figurative element, a bee, over the pattern on one side of the wall, introducing a focal point of organic life against the geometric structure. A significant portion of the mural was intentionally left as an uninterrupted color field to accommodate the future mounting of a television, ensuring the artwork and technology would coexist harmoniously without visual competition.
This mural is one component of a comprehensive artistic program for the room. The accompanying photographs provide context, illustrating how this abstract color field interacts with other murals to create a cohesive and stimulating visual environment for the game room.
Bridging Disciplines: Geometric Precision as Fine Art
While my commercial work often involves structured information design, this project channels a similar foundation in precision, geometry, and color theory into the realm of fine art. The mural demonstrates how systematic thinking and technical skill, honed through years of illustrative work, can be directed toward creating ambitious, non-representational artwork. It stands as evidence that the disciplines of commercial illustration and fine art muralism are not separate realms but interconnected practices that inform and enrich one another.
This installation highlights my capability to not only interpret artistic influences but to innovate upon them, creating site-specific works that engage with architecture and purpose. It underscores the potential for custom murals to transform functional spaces into unique artistic experiences.
