Bee Mural – Kobra-Inspired Installation
Client: Boca Grove Golf and Country Club

This mural draws its primary inspiration from the distinctive style of renowned Brazilian muralist Eduardo Kobra, fulfilling a specific request from the client. Kobra’s signature approach, featuring black and white figurative work overlaid on vibrant, bold patterns, provided the foundational concept for this piece.
The execution involved two distinct phases, each with its own technical demands. The monochromatic bee, while seemingly straightforward and quicker to render, required a confident and precise application. Any significant error would have necessitated repainting the intricate color pattern beneath it, making the process one of careful, deliberate strokes. The figure was executed using acrylics and acrylic paint markers, tools that allowed for both broad coverage and fine detail.
The true complexity of the project lies in the meticulously constructed color field beneath the bee. Moving beyond Kobra’s typical use of random colors in simple shapes, I developed a more systematic and personal geometric pattern. The design features a horizontal banded spectrum, where each color is expressed through a staggered vertical column of isometric cubes. This self-imposed structure required each three-dimensional cube to be painted with three pre-mixed, specific hues.
Achieving the desired spectrum and saturation was a labor-intensive process of color mixing. While I primarily used high-quality Golden Mural paints, I also integrated artists' acrylics and household paints to achieve the exact palette. Managing this array of materials required an extensive, albeit rudimentary, organizational system of labeled cans, cups, and jars to track custom mixtures. The entire pattern was painted in acrylics, building up the complex, rhythmic field that gives the mural its unique depth and energy.
This exploration of an isometric cube color spectrum proved to be a fruitful artistic development. I later adapted and expanded upon this same geometric theme for another large-scale mural installation at Boca Woods, demonstrating how a single fine art concept can evolve across different projects and spaces.
Fine Art Muralism: Where Precision Meets Expression
This project exemplifies how muralism functions as a legitimate and demanding form of fine art. It combines precise, almost cartographic planning, evident in the measured isometric grid, with expressive, freehand painting. The work bridges a gap between my commercial illustration practice, which often relies on structured systems for clarity, and the more intuitive, large-scale gestures of wall art. Both disciplines require problem-solving, color theory, and a deep understanding of composition, whether the goal is to guide visitors through an event or to create a captivating focal point in a room.
The bee mural was part of a broader artistic program for the space. The accompanying photographs provide context, showing how this piece interacts with other murals to form a cohesive and engaging visual environment.
