Portrait in mixed media
Artist, Illustrator: John Potter - Escape Key Graphics

This portrait of Frank Zappa. It dates way back to my days at Ringling College of Art and Design and a class I took from illustrator Don Maitz. Anyhow... Maitz encouraged me to let loose with my weirdness on a portrait of a suitably unusual character. I don't remember how I came to select Frank Zappa, but I did. Sketches started with extremely rudimentary and become incrementally more complex until I arrived at the final piece. I worked in a a loose style on illustration board utilizing assorted water based paints, inks and colored pencils. The result has a spontaneous, dynamic feel with a touch of a woodcut look. This portrait could be considered either illustration or fine art. Contact me if you need an expressive portrait.
