26"X40" Oil paint on canvas
Painted 2021

This oil painting was created for the cover of Phillip Singer An Accounting, a 2011 book by Jon Wiles published through Alachua Press. The work represents a significant intersection of my fine art practice and professional illustration services, combining traditional hand painted portraiture with contemporary digital design and application.
The Subject and the Story
The book is based on a factual criminal case and prison records. It tells the story of a deaf Jewish man from New York who traveled to Gainesville, Florida, where he killed his wife, the wife of the district attorney and several other people. After three decades incarcerated in Florida’s infamous Raiford Prison, he was released and resumed his life. This was a complex and morally ambiguous subject, requiring a cover image that conveyed gravity, tension, and psychological depth.

From a Blurry Reference to a Finished Portrait
Only one known photograph of Phillip Singer existed. It was black and white, heavily degraded, and offered little detail. This was the sole visual reference available. I chose to work in oil on canvas at a scale of 26 by 40 inches, allowing for significant development of form and presence. Rather than attempting a forensic reconstruction, I took a relatively straightforward approach to the likeness while focusing on capturing the subject's intensity and unsettling demeanor. The dark, atmospheric background was a deliberate compositional choice, amplifying the painting's psychological weight and focusing attention entirely on the figure.
Bridging Fine Art and Commercial Illustration
This project exemplifies the productive overlap between fine art painting and professional illustration. The portrait was executed using traditional materials and techniques rooted in studio practice. However, its purpose was explicitly commercial and communicative: to function as a book cover that would attract readers, signal genre and tone, and hold its own at small scale on a shelf or screen. After the painting was completed and photographed, the final cover was assembled digitally, with title typography and design elements added in Adobe Photoshop.
This hybrid workflow is characteristic of my approach to commissioned artwork. I bring the sensibility and craft of a fine artist to projects with specific communication goals. Whether working in oil, graphite, or vector illustration, I prioritize conceptual clarity, emotional resonance, and technical precision. The distinction between "art" and "illustration" is, in practice, often fluid; what matters is the effectiveness of the image in its intended context.

The Strategic Value of Illustrated Book Covers
There is a well known adage that one should not judge a book by its cover, yet in practice, readers inevitably do. A strong, memorable cover is one of the most effective marketing assets a publication can have. Authors and publishers have shared with me that my cover illustrations have contributed to increased visibility and sales, opening doors to audiences who might not have discovered the work otherwise.
Illustration offers distinct advantages over photography for cover design. It allows for the clear depiction of abstract concepts, historical or fictional subjects for which no photographic reference exists, and complete authorial control over every element of color, light, and composition. This flexibility enables a tailored visual identity that aligns precisely with the content and tone of the publication. My cover work spans traditional and digital media, with more recent projects executed entirely in vector format for crisp, scalable reproduction across print and digital platforms.
Each cover I create is designed to capture attention, communicate narrative, and strengthen the publication's visual identity. It is a form of visual storytelling that operates at the intersection of fine art practice and strategic design.

ABOUT COVER ILLUSTRATIONS:
There is a well-known saying that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but in reality, people do. If you have invested time, money, and creative energy into a book, magazine, or other publication, having a strong, eye-catching cover is essential. Authors and publishers often tell me that my cover illustrations have helped sell more copies than the content alone, opening doors to readers who might not have discovered the work otherwise. While this may seem surprising, it underscores the importance of compelling visual storytelling in capturing attention and communicating ideas at a glance.
Illustration offers unique advantages over photography for cover design. While photography can be a powerful choice in certain situations, illustration allows for the clear depiction of abstract concepts, fictional settings, or ideas that cannot be photographed. It also provides complete control over color, lighting, and composition, down to precise digital detail. This flexibility allows each cover to convey mood, tone, and narrative in a way that is fully tailored to the content it represents.
Over the years, I have created cover illustrations for books, magazines, and a wide variety of publications. The earliest work currently displayed on my site is the 2011 cover for Phillip Singer: An Accounting, which was hand-painted in oil, photographed, and then completed digitally using Illustrator and Photoshop. Today, most of my cover illustrations are produced entirely digitally, with a focus on vector-based techniques that ensure crisp, clean, and scalable designs suitable for print or digital media.
Each cover I create is designed to capture attention, communicate the story, and elevate the publication's visual identity. Whether for a book, magazine, or other creative project, my illustrations combine artistry, precision, and concept-driven design to make a memorable first impression that engages audiences and enhances the overall impact of the work.
